You know the feeling. The loop slaps in your headphones at 2am, the kick punches, the bass purrs, everything sits where you want it. Then you bounce it, play it on a club rig or even just your car, and the low end turns to mush, the vocal disappears, and the whole thing sounds smaller than the demo you were jealous of last week. Learning how to mix a track is mostly learning to close that gap, so what you hear is what everyone else hears everywhere else.
The gap between your headphones and the club
Headphones lie to you in two ways. First, they put each ear in its own sealed world, so anything panned hard sounds wide and exciting even when it would collapse on a mono PA. Second, most consumer and even some studio headphones bump around 60 to 120 Hz and dip in the low mids, so you over-trust your sub and under-build the body. A club system does the opposite: 18-inch drivers that expose every bit of sub you left unchecked, and a room that smears the 200 Hz to 500 Hz region into mud.
The fix is not a plugin. It is referencing your mix on three sources before you trust it: your headphones, a phone or small mono speaker, and whatever loud system you can reach. If the kick still reads as a kick on a phone that cannot reproduce 50 Hz, you mixed the click and body right. Kick and bass share one space: mono below 100-120 Hz, carve lanes
The most common reason a mix falls apart on a big system is that the kick and bass are fighting over the same 40 to 120 Hz real estate. You hear it as a low end that pumps unpredictably and never feels solid. The cause is two sources with overlapping fundamentals, often out of phase, summing to something that cancels on some notes and stacks on others.
Start by making everything below roughly 100 to 120 Hz mono. A low end spread in stereo is the fastest way to lose power on a mono club sub, and adds nothing you can hear down there anyway. Use a utility or mid-side EQ to collapse the sub band to the center. Then carve lanes: decide who owns the very bottom. In most house and techno the kick owns 40 to 80 Hz and the bass tucks in above it, or the bass holds 50 to 70 Hz while the kick lives in the transient click around 2 to 5 kHz. A high-pass on the bass at 35 to 45 Hz also clears subsonic rumble that eats headroom for nothing audible.
Sidechain the bass to the kick (1-3 dB, fast attack)
Even with clean lanes, the kick and bass will still land on the same beat and stack into a 4 to 6 dB peak that triggers your limiter and makes the mix duck. The fix is to sidechain the bass to the kick, but most beginners overdo it. You do not need the breathing pump of a big-room drop, just 1 to 3 dB of gain reduction with a fast attack (under 5 ms) and a release timed to tempo, usually 80 to 150 ms at 124 to 130 BPM, so the bass recovers just before the next kick.
Set it by ear with the release: too short and the bass clicks back in audibly, too long and the low end goes thin. Keep the deepest dip in the 1 to 3 dB range. Done right you will not hear the ducking, you will just notice the kick has room to punch through and the low end stops flapping.
Mid-range clarity from 200 Hz to 2 kHz
Once the low end is solid, the next thing that buries a mix is the 200 Hz to 500 Hz region. Almost every element, the kick body, bass harmonics, snare, pads, vocal chest tone, has energy here, and it stacks into a boxy wall. The symptom is a mix that sounds full in solo but turns into a blanket when everything plays together, no single element clearly readable.
Treat this region with subtractive EQ, not boosts. Find the one or two elements that genuinely need 250 to 400 Hz (usually the bass and a warm pad) and cut a couple of dB out of everything else there. Presence for leads and vocals lives higher, around 2 to 5 kHz, so if your vocal is lost, the fix is usually a cut in the busy 300 Hz mud, not a boost up top. Mixing fundamentals come down to this trade: every element gets a lane where it is loudest, and gives ground everywhere else.
Width that survives a mono fold
Stereo width is the most fun knob and the most dangerous. Hard-panned hats, wide reverbs, and stereo wideners all sound huge in headphones and can vanish or smear when a club sums to mono, which many do. The test is one button: collapse your master to mono. If an element disappears or the mix gets quieter and weirder, you have phase problems in the width.
Keep the foundation, kick, bass, snare, lead vocal, mostly centered and mono. Earn width with the supporting cast: hats, percussion, pads, and short stereo delays. Use real stereo information (a doubled take, a true stereo reverb) rather than a mid-side widener cranked to 200 percent, which just creates phase content that cancels on the fold. If your loop sounds enormous in headphones but thin in mono, that width was borrowed and a PA will take it back.
Where AI mixing feedback actually helps (and where it doesn't)
After a few hours your ears are fried and you stop hearing problems you would catch fresh the next day. A/B against references before you call it done
The last step before you commit is the one most producers skip. Load two or three released tracks in your genre at matched loudness (a louder track always sounds better, so pull the reference down until it matches your mix). Then A/B specific things, not vibes. Is your kick weight in the same ballpark? Is your top end as open, or dull by comparison? Does your low end carry an extra 3 dB of flab at 80 Hz? Do not copy the reference exactly, since their master has a chain yours has not yet, but the gaps in a matched A/B are the ones that show up on the club rig. When your mix holds up next to a reference, survives a mono fold, and reads on a phone speaker, you have a track that translates.
