How to Mix Techno That Translates to the Club

A techno track lives or dies on a system you probably do not own. What sounds huge on your monitors still has to survive a stack of 18-inch subs, a room that smears the low mids, and a sound engineer who will pull your track if the kick does not move air. Learning how to mix techno is mostly learning to mix for that room while sitting in yours. The good news is that the rules are concrete: mono lows, controlled sub, a carved-out mud zone, and a loudness target that matches what real releases actually sit at. Get those right and the rest is taste.

You are mixing partially blind where it matters most

Here is the uncomfortable truth about techno production: the part of the spectrum that carries the weight on a club rig is the part your monitors reproduce worst. Most nearfield monitors roll off hard below 50 Hz, and small ones give up around 60 to 70 Hz. Headphones are worse, often faking a bump around 60 to 120 Hz and dipping in the low mids, so you over-trust your sub and under-build the body. That means anything you do below 30 to 40 Hz, you are doing by faith, not by ear.

The fix is not a better speaker, it is a workflow that does not depend on hearing the sub. High-pass everything that is not the kick or bass at 30 Hz or higher to clear out subsonic rumble you cannot hear but a club sub will happily amplify into wasted headroom. Watch a spectrum analyzer on the master so you can see energy below 40 Hz even when you cannot hear it. And reference on three sources before you trust the mix: your monitors, a phone speaker, and the loudest rig you can reach. If the kick still reads as a kick on a phone that cannot reproduce 50 Hz, you balanced the click and the body correctly.

Everything below 150 Hz is mono, no exceptions

The single fastest way to lose power on a club system is to let your low end spread in stereo. A big PA sums the low frequencies to a mono sub array, so any stereo information you put down there does not widen anything, it just creates phase content that partially cancels when the two sides fold together. You hear it as a low end that pumps unpredictably and feels weaker than it looked on the meter.

Collapse everything below roughly 150 Hz to the center with a utility or a mid-side EQ. Kick, sub, bass, the low body of your percussion, all mono down there. This is not a stylistic choice, it is how you protect energy on the big mono-summed systems techno is built for. Get the low-end weight right: sub versus bass

Producers chasing weight tend to pile everything into the pure sub, the 20 to 60 Hz band, and end up with a mix that feels boomy and undefined yet somehow still thin on real speakers. The body that makes a techno kick feel heavy in a room actually lives higher, in the 60 to 250 Hz bass band, more than in the sub itself. The sub gives you the felt pressure, but the bass band gives you the punch you can actually hear on most systems.

As a starting point, build the kick so its body sits in the 60 to 150 Hz range with just enough sub underneath to feel it, rather than a 40 Hz boom that eats all your headroom. Decide who owns the very bottom: in a lot of peak-time techno the kick owns 50 to 90 Hz and the bassline tucks in above it, or the bass holds the low fundamental while the kick lives more in the click around 2 to 5 kHz. Whatever you choose, do not let both sources stack on the same 60 Hz fundamental, that is the boomy, undefined low end that falls apart on a big system. Cut the 250 to 500 Hz range for punch over warmth

Once the low end is solid, the next thing that buries a techno mix is the 250 to 500 Hz region. Almost everything has energy here: kick body, bass harmonics, the low end of stabs and pads, percussion resonance. It stacks into a boxy wall, and the symptom is a mix that sounds full when you solo parts but turns into a blanket when everything plays together. Techno wants punch and space, not warmth, and warmth is exactly what over-stacks in this band.

Treat the 250 to 400 Hz mud zone with subtractive EQ. Find the one or two elements that genuinely need that range, usually the bass and maybe one warm pad, and cut a few dB out of everything else there. A couple of dB pulled from the kick, the percussion bus, and the synth layers in 250 to 400 Hz opens up the whole track and lets the transients breathe. You are trading warmth for definition, and on a club system definition is what makes the groove read at volume.

Keep stereo width narrow for peak-time energy

Width is the most fun knob and the most dangerous one in techno. The genre gets its force from a tight, forward, almost mono core groove, not from a huge stereo spread. Hard-panned percussion and cranked stereo wideners sound exciting in headphones and then smear or vanish when the room sums toward mono. A peak-time track that feels enormous in your cans but thin on the floor borrowed that width, and the PA collected the debt.

Keep the foundation centered: kick, bass, and your main groove elements mostly mono. Earn modest width with the supporting cast, hats, atmospheres, short stereo delays, and the occasional wide reverb tail. Aim for a fairly narrow overall picture with the lows fully mono and only the tops and ambience opening up. Use real stereo information, a true stereo reverb or a genuinely doubled part, rather than a mid-side widener pushed to 200 percent that just manufactures phase content destined to cancel on the fold. Reverb and delay, used sparingly

Techno is a dry genre by design. The driving, relentless feel comes from transients landing cleanly on the grid, and reverb is the enemy of clean transients. Drench your kick and percussion in a long hall and you wash out the very punch that makes the track move. Beginners reach for big reverbs to make things sound finished, and end up with a mix that is loud but mushy.

Keep the core drums dry. Use short reverbs, under 1 second, and tight delays synced to tempo (an eighth or sixteenth) to add depth to stabs, atmospheres, and the occasional vocal hit, not to the kick and bass. High-pass your reverb and delay returns around 300 to 500 Hz so the wet signal does not refill the mud zone you just cleared. The space you want in techno is in the arrangement and the pumping, not in long tails smearing everything together.

LUFS for the club and checking your low-end balance

Loudness in techno is misunderstood. Streaming platforms normalize to around -14 LUFS integrated, and clubs run their own limiting on the system, so chasing a brick-walled master does not make you louder on the floor, it just crushes your transients and kills the punch. There is no single magic LUFS number for the genre. Practically, leave true peak headroom: keep your master ceiling at -1 dBTP so inter-sample peaks do not clip on lossy codecs and club D/A converters. Mix into a limiter doing modest work rather than slamming it, and let the groove and the low-end balance create the sense of power, not the limiter.
