Mixing on Headphones: How to Make Your Mix Translate

Headphones bypass all of it: no reflections, no neighbor complaints at 1 AM, and the same sound in every house you ever live in. Lie 1: headphones misrepresent the sub, so judge 30 to 60 Hz by meter

Headphones get the sub wrong in both directions. Bass-heavy closed-backs deliver 30 to 60 Hz straight into your eardrum, so the region feels powerful even when barely any energy is there. Most open-backs roll off below 40 Hz instead and hide a sub that is already 4 dB too loud. And no pair of either kind moves air against your chest, so the physical cue that warns you a club system is about to overload never arrives. You cannot fix this by ear. The ear is what is being fooled.

So take the ear out of the decision. Put a spectrum analyzer on your master and load a loudness-matched released track in your genre next to your mix. Then read the 30 to 60 Hz region off the meter: is your sub sitting at the same height as the reference, or 3 to 6 dB away from it? Make the call from the curve, not the feel. Check the 150 to 500 Hz region while you are there, because headphones also flatter the low mids where muddy mixes are born. Left channel goes only to the left ear, right only to the right, and the hard separation makes every panned element and every widener sound more dramatic than it is. Drivers against your ears reveal detail that speakers in a room smear over. A short room reverb at 10 percent wet is clearly audible on headphones, so you stop turning it up the moment you hear it. Play the same mix on speakers and that tail disappears into the room's own reflections, leaving the track flat and dry, with no depth behind the drums.

The fix is the same discipline as the low end: comparison over feel. Pull up a released track with a depth you admire, match loudness, and A/B the tails directly. Listen to how long the snare's space hangs and how far back the pads sit, then push your sends until the depth matches the reference, not until you can merely hear the effect. Lie 4: headphone sessions creep louder every hour

With no neighbors to annoy, headphone level creeps up without you noticing. Louder always sounds better, so each nudge upward feels like the mix improving, and after two hours you are monitoring 10 dB hotter than when you started. At that level your ears compress, the low end feels fuller than it is, fatigue dulls the top octave, and every decision from there on comes from a worn-out hearing system.

Calibrate and protect. Set a working level around conversation loudness, roughly 70 to 75 dB SPL, mark it on your interface knob, and return to that mark after every loud check. Take a 5 minute break with the headphones off every 45 minutes. It feels like lost time and it is the cheapest translation tool you have: a fatigued you mixes a different track than a fresh you.

The gear baseline: open-back, a known curve, correction if you want it

  1. Fold the whole mix to mono and listen for 60 seconds. Anything that collapses or vanishes gets its width pulled back.
  2. Play a rough bounce on your phone speaker, checking whether the groove and the lead survive with no sub at all.
  3. Play it in a car or on a Bluetooth speaker. Cheap playback exposes harsh 2 to 5 kHz and bloated low mids instantly.
  4. Keep one cheap speaker you know well and trust what it says about balance, the way studios kept a mono Auratone for decades.
