The Techno Mixdown Checklist: Six Stages Before You Call It Done

You searched for a techno mixdown checklist, so the track is probably arranged, the sounds are picked, and the question now is whether the mix is actually finished or whether you have just stopped hearing the problems. This checklist runs stage by stage, from the sub up to the final verification pass, with the numbers to check at each step. Run it once and you will catch the issues that survive most bedroom mixdowns, in about an hour.

Low end first: in techno the kick owns the sub, and below 150 Hz is mono

The low end decides whether a techno mixdown works at all, so it is the first checkpoint. Start with ownership. At 128 to 135 BPM the kick fundamental sits somewhere between 45 and 55 Hz, and nothing else is allowed to live there. Either the bassline is high-passed to tuck in above the kick, around 80 to 100 Hz, or the rumble fills the gaps between hits and ducks out of the way when the kick lands. Sidechain the bass to the kick with 3 to 6 dB of gain reduction and a release short enough that the bass is back at full level before the next quarter note. Then check the stereo image down there. Put a utility plugin on every channel that carries sub energy and force it mono below 120 to 150 Hz, or use a mono-maker on the mix bus set in that range. Wide low end cancels on club systems with mono subs, so a rumble that sounds huge in headphones turns into a hole on the dancefloor. Collapse the whole mix to mono for ten seconds: if the kick and rumble lose weight, you have stereo content below 150 Hz that has to go.

Drums and groove: hats sit 6 to 10 dB under the kick, and the bus gets glue

The most common drum mistake in a techno mixdown is hats and rides that crept up over hours of looping. Your ear adapts to bright content, so after a long session the hats often end up several dB hotter than the balance you set at the start of the day. Check them cold: on a fresh listen, closed hats sit roughly 6 to 10 dB below the kick on the channel meters, and the open hat or ride peaks just under the clap. If you turn the monitors down to conversation level and the hats are still the loudest thing you hear, pull them back.

Next, transients. Percussion that lost its attack under compression reads as flat groove, not driving groove. Use a transient shaper to add 2 to 4 dB of attack on the percussion that carries the rhythm. Then glue the drum bus: a bus compressor with a slow attack of 10 to 30 ms, a release timed to the track, and only 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction. The slow attack lets the kick and hat transients through while the compressor pulls the sustains together into one instrument.

Synths and atmosphere: cut the low mids, high-pass every return

Stabs, pads, and atmospheres are where a clean techno low end gets buried again. Every synth layer carries energy in the 200 to 400 Hz region, and four layers of it stack into the blanket that makes a mix feel thick instead of dark. High-pass pads and atmospheres up to 150 to 250 Hz, then cut 2 to 4 dB around 250 to 400 Hz with a wide Q on the layers that do not carry the main hook. The track should get clearer without getting thinner, because you removed overlap, not body.

The returns need the same treatment. Techno leans on long reverbs and dub delays, and every wet signal pours the low mids of its source back into the mix for seconds after the dry hit is gone. High-pass every reverb and delay return at 300 to 500 Hz and leave that filter in the chain permanently. Space and dynamics: a techno drop has to hit 2 to 3 dB harder than the breakdown

A techno track is an energy curve, and a static mixdown flattens it. Check the arrangement-level dynamics as their own stage. In the breakdown, real elements should leave: pull the kick, thin the percussion, high-pass the rumble away, so the section actually drops in energy instead of just losing the kick channel. When the drop lands, the meters should read 2 to 3 dB more energy than the breakdown peak, and the perceived jump should be bigger than that because the low end returns all at once.

Real elements leave in the breakdown so the section actually drops in energy. When the drop lands, the meters should read 2 to 3 dB more than the breakdown peak.

Then verify the automation is doing work. Filter sweeps that open into transitions, a 1 dB ride on the lead through the final eight bars of a build, half a beat of silence before the drop: these are mix moves, not arrangement afterthoughts. Loop your biggest transition and listen for whether tension builds and releases or whether sections just start and stop. Master bus: no limiter while mixing, peaks around -6 dB

Take the limiter off. A limiter on the master during mixdown hides every balance mistake behind gain reduction, and you end up mixing into a squashed picture. While the mix is in progress, the master chain is empty or close to it: a gentle bus compressor doing 1 to 2 dB at most, and nothing that clips or limits.

Aim the final bounce so peaks land around -6 dB with no channel or bus clipping anywhere. That headroom is what mastering needs to bring a club techno master up to its target, which for peak-time techno sits around -12 to -9 LUFS integrated, with the loudest drops pushing -8 to -6 LUFS short-term. A mix that hits -8 LUFS before mastering got there through master-bus crushing, not balance. The final pass: mono, matched references, and one bad speaker

The last stage is verification, and it only counts on fresh ears, so run it the next morning if you can. First, mono: play the full drop collapsed to mono for thirty seconds. Kick weight, bass level, and the main hook must all survive. Second, reference: A/B against two released techno tracks you trust, with the reference turned down to match your mix's loudness. Unmatched comparisons always favor the louder track, so level-match first, then compare one band at a time: sub, low mids, top end. Third, translation: play the bounce on earbuds, a phone speaker, and in the car. Each system exposes a different range, and a mix that holds up on all three holds up in the club.
