How to Mix Drum and Bass: Reese Control and a Kick That Cuts

Drum and bass punishes a sloppy low end harder than almost any genre. At 174 BPM the kick and the Reese are colliding twenty times a second, and any phase mess or stereo spread down low turns into a wash on a big rig. Learning how to mix drum and bass comes down to two things most people get wrong: controlling the Reese so it stays huge without smearing, and layering a kick that still cuts through all that bass weight. Get those two right and the rest of the track falls into place.

Why DnB low end is unforgiving at 174 BPM

At 174 BPM a bar lasts about 1.4 seconds and the gaps between hits are tiny, so there is no room for a low end that takes time to settle. A sub that rings out 200 ms after the note ends will overlap the next hit and build into a muddy drone. The faster the tempo, the tighter your low-end decay has to be, which is why a bass patch that sounds fine soloed at 120 BPM can fall apart at DnB speed.

On top of that, DnB is built for club and rave systems with serious subwoofers that expose every bit of low-end energy you left unchecked. Anything sloppy below 100 Hz, a sub spread in stereo, a kick fighting the bass for the same fundamental, an untamed Reese rumbling under everything, gets magnified on those rigs. Mono the sub, keep the Reese width up top

The single most important rule in DnB low end: everything below about 100 to 120 Hz must be mono. A sub that is even slightly spread in stereo loses power when a club system sums to mono, and on a big rig a wide sub can cause real phase cancellation that hollows out your bottom. You hear it as a sub that feels weaker than it should for how loud the meter reads.

That does not mean the whole Reese has to be mono, though. The trick is to split it: collapse the band below 100 to 120 Hz to dead center with a mid-side EQ or a utility, keeping the foundation rock solid, and let the upper harmonics above that stay wide and stereo. The growl and movement of a good Reese live in the mids and highs anyway, so you keep all the width and menace up top while the sub stays tight and mono underneath. Tame the Reese: multiband, mid/side EQ, resampling

A Reese bass is, by design, a detuned mess. Two or more sawtooth oscillators beating against each other create that moving, metallic growl, but the same beating makes the bass wander in level and phase. Untreated, a Reese reads as a bass that surges and drops unpredictably and never sits at a steady weight, especially when mixing Reese bass for a system that exposes every dip.

Tame it on three fronts. First, multiband compression to clamp the moving energy, with the lowest band held tight so the sub stays even while the mids breathe. Second, mid-side EQ so you can keep the low end mono and control the harsh harmonics that build up in the sides around 1 to 4 kHz. Third, and this is the one pros lean on most, resampling: bounce the Reese to audio, then process the rendered sample. Once it is audio you can EQ, clip, and shape a fixed waveform instead of a moving synth, which makes the bass far easier to control and far more consistent from note to note. Good drum and bass production almost always runs through a resampling stage for exactly this reason.

Layer the kick so it cuts through the bass

A single kick sample almost never survives a dense DnB bassline. The bass is so loud and so present across the spectrum that one kick gets swallowed, and you lose the snap that drives the track. The fix is layering: build the kick from two or three samples, each owning a different band, so together they punch through wherever the bass is not.

A common layering recipe is a low layer for weight around 50 to 80 Hz (often shared carefully with the sub so they do not fight), a mid layer for body around 100 to 200 Hz, and a top layer for the click and attack up around 2 to 5 kHz. That high click is what makes the kick read on small speakers and cut through the Reese, because the bass rarely has much clean transient energy up there. High-pass the layers so they only contribute their band, line up their phase so the attacks stack instead of cancel, and the layered kick will punch through a wall of bass where a single sample drowns.

Snare and break that punch without harshness

The snare and the break carry the swing and energy of a DnB tune, and they are easy to get wrong in one of two directions: thin and weak, or harsh and fatiguing. A weak snare has no body, so it cracks but never lands. A harsh one has too much upper energy and turns the whole track into an ice pick after thirty seconds.

Balance it around two regions. The body and weight of the snare live around 200 Hz, so if your snare feels flimsy, a small boost there gives it the thump that makes it hit. The crack and snap live around 3 to 5 kHz, and that is where it cuts through the mix, but it is also where harshness builds. Boost it enough to read clearly, then check it loud and at length, because what sounds crisp in a quick listen often turns brittle over a full track. For chopped breaks, the same logic applies per hit: keep the 200 Hz body so the groove has weight, control the 3 to 5 kHz so a busy break does not shred your ears.

Energy and loudness for a club system

DnB is loud, aggressive music meant for big rigs, so the master needs energy, but slamming it flat is the wrong way to get there. Streaming platforms normalize playback to around -14 LUFS, so a master crushed to -6 LUFS just gets turned down and arrives with dead transients and no impact. For a DnB master, aim around -8 to -10 LUFS integrated so it stays punchy after normalization, and set a true peak ceiling at -1 dBTP so the kick and snare transients do not clip when a lossy codec converts the file.

The energy should come from the arrangement and the mix balance, not from the limiter doing all the work. A kick and snare that already punch through a controlled Reese will feel loud and aggressive at -9 LUFS without being crushed. Reference and check your low-end balance

Before you call a DnB mix done, do two checks that catch the problems a rig will otherwise expose. First, collapse your master to mono. If the sub weakens or the Reese smears, you have stereo content down low that needs pulling to center. Second, A/B against two or three released DnB tracks at matched loudness, pulling the reference down until it sits at your level since a louder track always sounds better. Compare specifics: is your sub as solid, your kick as snappy, your Reese as controlled, or does yours carry an extra 3 dB of flab around 80 Hz?
