How to Mix House: From Bedroom Loop to Booth-Ready

House is a groove genre before it is anything else, and the groove is the first thing a rough mix kills. You can have the right chords, a warm bassline and a kick you love, but if those low-end elements fight each other the track that moved you in the studio just sits flat on a club PA. The hats lose their shuffle, the bass smears into the kick, and the energy you felt at home never makes the trip to the room. That gap between bedroom and booth is almost never about your ideas, it is about the mix. Here is how to mix house so the groove that moved you still moves a floor.

Get the kick and bass to share one space

The first place a house mix dies is the low end, because the kick and the bass both want to live in the 40 to 150 Hz range and they end up fighting over it. You hear the result as a low end that pumps unpredictably and never feels solid, full one bar and hollow the next. The cause is two sources with overlapping fundamentals, often out of phase, stacking on some notes and cancelling on others.

Start by collapsing everything below roughly 100 to 120 Hz to mono. A stereo low end phase-cancels the moment a mono-summed PA gets hold of it, and you lose nothing audible down there by centering it. Then sidechain the bass to the kick, but keep it subtle: 1 to 3 dB of gain reduction with a fast attack and a release timed to the tempo, which matters even more in deep house where the bass sustains under every kick. Finally, carve lanes. Give the kick its fundamental around 50 to 60 Hz, let the bass take body slightly above or below it, and cut the bass where the kick lives so the two stop trampling each other. Lock the groove before you polish

House is a groove genre before it is anything else, and no amount of EQ will save a loop that doesn't move. Before you touch a single mixing decision, get the swing right. Put some shuffle on the hats, shakers, and percussion, and resist the urge to quantize everything to 100 percent. Tech house in particular lives on the off-beat hat shuffle and the bounce of the bassline, and a dead-straight grid kills both.

Vary your velocities so the hats breathe instead of machine-gunning at the same level, and leave space. The most common bedroom mistake is stacking every layer into the drop until the groove suffocates under its own density. A house track that grooves has gaps you can feel, and those gaps are where the bounce lives. Get the loop moving first, then mix it.

Make the mid-range read clearly

Once the low end is locked, the next thing that buries a house mix is the 200 Hz to 2 kHz region. Almost every element has energy here, the kick body, bass harmonics, vocal chest tone, stabs, pads, and it stacks into a boxy wall. The symptom is a mix that sounds full in solo but turns into a blanket the moment everything plays together, with no single element clearly readable.

Clean the buildup in the 200 to 400 Hz range first, since that is where the mud collects. Then, instead of cranking the level of whatever is getting lost, carve room for it. If your vocal or your stab is buried, put a gentle 1 to 3 dB dip around the same 1 to 3 kHz region in the elements competing with it, so it has somewhere to sit. Width that survives the mono fold

Stereo width is the most fun knob in a house mix and the most dangerous. Wide hats, big stereo pads, and lush reverb tails all sound enormous in headphones and can vanish or smear the moment a club sums to mono, which many systems do. Keep the lows mono, no exceptions, and reserve your width for the supporting cast: hats, pads, atmospheres, and reverb tails.

Keep a correlation meter on your master and check mono often, not just at the end. The test is one button: collapse to mono and listen for anything that disappears or any moment where the mix gets quieter and weirder. That is phase content in your width that a PA will take back. If your loop sounds huge in headphones but thin in mono, the width was borrowed, and the booth is where you find out.

Loudness for club and streaming

How loud you push the master depends on where the track is going. Streaming platforms normalize playback to around -14 LUFS, so slamming a limiter to get a hot number buys you nothing once Spotify turns it back down, it just costs you the dynamics you crushed. The club is the opposite: nothing is normalizing, and what the floor wants is a kick that hits with space around it over a brickwalled number.

Either way, keep your true peak under -1 dBTP so the master survives codec encoding without clipping, and always reference at matched loudness, since a louder track will always sound better until you level it. Check your mix objectively

Your ears lie to you after a couple of hours. Ear fatigue rolls off the top end in your perception, so you keep adding brightness that isn't there in the morning. The fix is structure. A/B two or three references in the exact same lane, because deep house and tech house sit very differently and a deep house reference will make your tech house track sound wrong for the wrong reasons. Check in mono, on multiple systems, and at low volume, since quiet listening exposes balance problems that loud listening hides. Then walk away and come back fresh.
